AI Home Design vs a Floor Planner: Which Do You Need to Plan Your House?

You have a plot, a family and a list of rooms. Do you open a floor planner and start drawing, or let an AI draft the house first? They solve different problems, and picking the wrong one costs weeks.

The short answer

Use a floor planner when you already know the layout and want to draw it. Use AI home design when you are starting from a plot and a wish list and want to see a complete house you can then change. Most people planning a new house are in the second position. MakaanPlan does both: draw your own plan to scale, or let the AI draft it, and either way share a professional, dimensioned floor plan.

What a floor planner does

A floor planner is a drawing tool. Tools such as Floorplanner, RoomSketcher and Planner 5D give you a canvas, walls, doors and furniture, and you draw the plan. Many now add templates or AI helpers, and they are very good at what they are for: drawing a layout you already have in mind, quickly and to scale.

The catch is that the hard part of planning a house is not drawing it. It is deciding where everything goes: which rooms face the road, where the stairs land, how a car fits, which bedroom gets the light. A blank canvas leaves every one of those decisions to you, before you have seen a single option.

What AI home design does

AI home design starts from your brief. In MakaanPlan you give the plot size, the bedrooms, bathrooms, parking and the rooms you want, and the AI drafts the whole house: a connected layout that fits the plot, with every room, door and window placed. From there it is yours:

  • Drag a wall and the rooms on both sides re-measure.
  • Resize rooms, move doors and windows, add floors and a staircase.
  • Furnish every room and choose floor and furniture finishes.
  • See it as a real house in 3D, built from the same plan: a presentation view, dollhouse, isometric, top and street views, in morning, noon or evening light.
  • Built-in checks flag rooms that are too small, overlaps, plot coverage and furniture that does not fit.

Prefer to draw it yourself? Start from a blank canvas and draw the rooms and walls to scale; the same checks and the same 3D house follow your drawing.

When it is right, you share an architect-style plan sheet as a PDF or PNG: three chains of dimensions, a room schedule, a title block with the project name, scale and date, a north arrow, and the road side and main entry marked. It goes to your architect, builder, family or clients, alongside a presentation sheet from the 3D view if you want one.

Which should you use?

A floor planner, if an architect has already given you the plan and you want to redraw it, or you are rearranging the furniture in a house that already exists.

AI home design, if you are about to build: you have the plot, you know who will live there, and you want to see real options for the whole house, change them freely, and walk into your first meeting with an architect or builder with a plan you have already lived with on screen.

What neither one does

Neither replaces an architect or a structural engineer. MakaanPlan does not produce stamped or approved drawings, structural or MEP design, or photorealistic renders. It is the stage before the architect: the part where you decide what house you actually want.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a floor planner and AI home design?

A floor planner is a drawing tool: you start from a blank canvas and draw the walls of a layout you already have in mind. AI home design starts from your brief, the plot and the rooms you need, drafts a complete house for you, and lets you edit it, with the 3D house and the design checks following every change.

Which is better for planning a new house?

If you are starting from an empty plot and a list of rooms, AI home design gets you to a complete, editable layout faster, because you are not drawing from nothing. If you already have a finished plan from an architect and only want to redraw it, a drawing tool is enough.

Can I edit the house the AI drafts?

Yes. In MakaanPlan the draft is a starting point: move any wall and the rooms on both sides re-measure, resize rooms, move doors and windows, add floors, furnish every room and choose finishes.

Does AI home design replace an architect?

No. It is the stage before the architect: a believable, dimensioned plan of the house you want, to take to your architect or builder. It does not produce stamped, approved or structural drawings.
