Designing inside the setbacks
A 50 × 90 ft plot is not a 50 × 90 ft house. In DHA Lahore, 10 ft must stay clear at the front, 7 ft at the rear and 5 ft on each side, leaving a 40 × 73 ft envelope on each floor. The room schedule above is sized to fit it, with the car porch (18 × 20 ft, room for two cars side by side) and the drawing room sharing the 40 ft front of the house.
Three kinds of space on the ground floor
A kanal house usually separates guests, family and service. Here the drawing room and a guest powder room sit at the front. The dining room, family lounge and kitchen sit behind them, with a store and a utility corner by the kitchen. Bedroom 1, with its own bathroom, stays on the ground floor for parents who should not have to climb stairs.
The first floor
Upstairs the master suite takes the most space: a 17 × 15 ft bedroom with a dressing room and its own bathroom. Bedroom 3 has an attached bathroom, and Bedrooms 4 and 5 share one. A TV lounge at the top of the stairs gives the upper floor a living room of its own, which is what makes a kanal house work for a joint family. The servant quarter goes on the roof, with its own bath and stair access.
